Topper's Guide to Success- Barinderpreet Singh (2019 Batch, IIT Delhi)

Updated: May 20, 2020

Do I necessarily have to join coaching if I want to crack JEE? How should I study two months before JEE? How to be consistent during my preparation?

Do you also ponder over these questions regularly? Then we just have a perfect article for you. In the third article of 'Topper's Guide to Success' series, we connected with Barinderpreet Singh, an IIT Delhi graduate who ranked AIR 336 in JEE Advanced and asked how he traveled along his path towards IIT Delhi. Read the full article below to know more.

Hi, I’m Barinder. I pursued my B.Tech in Mathematics and Computing from IIT Delhi after securing AIR 336 in JEE advanced 2015 and AIR 908 in JEE Mains 2015. Currently, I am working for Microsoft as a Software Engineer.

I didn’t go to any of the reputed coaching centers, rather I had separate tutors for each of the three subjects. And so, when I started preparing for JEE in 2013, I didn’t have such high hopes. Seeing people, who have been preparing for four years, sit and study with you does get a bit overwhelming in the starting, but within two months or so, that feeling diminished and I started feeling more and more confident as my rank in the class tests started improving. I tried to focus on finding my mistakes and improving on them rather than thinking about getting ahead in the competition.

With tons of study material available for preparing, concentrate on completing one or two books per subject rather than referring many and finishing none.

Everyone has his/her own way to go about things. One approach may not work for everybody, and that’s what you have to find out, “What works best for you”, and stick to that. First of all, you can’t just crack JEE by working hard for one or two months. You have to be consistent. One thing that helped me maintain consistency was having leisure breaks. For me, it was in the form of cricket matches. That clearly helped me clear my mind at times and helped me energize myself.

With tons of study material available for preparing, concentrate on completing one or two books per subject rather than referring many and finishing none. I tried to pay maximum attention in class and revise the lectures daily through my class notes. In the last one or two months, I solved previous year question papers. Instead of trying questions topic wise, try to attempt the full paper year-wise and analyze. I used to sit and attempt them in the exact same time slots 9 AM -12 PM and 2 PM - 5 PM, and then check the answers and evaluate my mistakes. That really helped me a lot during my JEE attempt.

Cracking JEE demands hard work, consistent hard work. At times one may feel like it’s too much. But remember in the end, It’s all worth it.

All the best and thanks!
