How to study for JEE/NEET in times of Corona?

Updated: Aug 24, 2020

[This article is primarily focused on students who are enrolled in local coaching institutes/ students who have enrolled in major coaching institutes & waiting for their classes to start in next 20 days/ students who will prepare for IIT through self-study]

Students who have just cleared Class 10 examinations and made up their minds for entrance exams in 2022 are facing a daunting task to start their preparations largely due to the uncertainty that lies ahead because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, one can only hope to learn and improve themselves through online classes and the information available on the internet. And with the rising cases of Coronavirus, online classes do look like a new normal for the entire year of 2020.

Compared to previous batches, people moving to IXth Standard have been unfortunate to be evaluated based on pre-board examinations and previous performances. We got the chance of virtually interacting with some of these students and most of them seem to be stuck in their homes wondering how to start their preparations. Through this article, we are answering some of the common questions haunting such JEE and Medical aspirants, so that you can see the positive rays of hope that lie ahead.

One of the popular and conventional ways for preparation is to join any coaching institute which will guide you through the syllabus and pattern of the examinations. But due to the various safety concerns linked with physical classes, most of the coachings have shifted to online lectures. What makes this option difficult is the suddenness in the change of the mode of classes. Within a matter of weeks, students had to start taking classes in a completely different way and environment, posing some issues in front of them.

Still, we think there are a lot of positive sides to online lectures if done rightly. Think about the time you’ll be saving without having to commute to your classes. One can not ignore the convenience of taking classes at their own home at any time and at their own comfortable pace. Although online classes restrict proper communication between the students and teachers, with messaging apps like Whatsapp, Telegram, and Facebook, you can create a study group with peers and teachers providing assistance in doubts and concepts all day long.

Now, there are some few facts and tips to help you gain a perspective:

  1. The difference in difficulty level of subjects in Class 11 and Class 10 is substantial. And so, it might take some time to grasp some topics. It’s natural. What you can do to facilitate your study is to regularly make notes. Here are some secret tips to make better notes.

  2. Having a good grasp of calculations in Mathematics (like knowing tables till 20, first 20 squares and first 10 cubes) is going to be helpful not only for JEE aspirants but also for medical aspirants too.

  3. Although till class 10, you haven’t been much familiar with the idea of numericals in physics and chemistry, numericals are the way ahead from here on. Almost 100% of questions in Physics & Mathematics are based on numerical and ~33% of questions in Chemistry are based on numerical. To have a good understanding and a smooth transition, we have created a list of the recommended books for JEE.

  4. Syllabus of both JEE and NEET can be completed in 14 -15 months with a regular focused study of ~8 hours/day. (Although the number of hours is actually not a good way of determining the quality of study done, ~8 hours/day came out as an average number of hours put in by most of my friends in IIT Delhi and AIIMS who had an All India Rank under 1000.)

  5. Persistence in your effort is what matters the most if you want to master the topics on time. The other thing is the habit of making a schedule, both long term and short term. Start by downloading the syllabus of the exam to get a brief understanding of the total number of topics that need to be covered.

There is no denying to the fact that we are, indeed, enduring some very difficult times especially for aspirants like you, who have a ton load of uncertainty looming over your career prospects. The best way to handle the changing reality of this pandemic is to embrace the “new normal”. So, cheer yourselves up, set small goals, put on the productivity hat and get back on your track to acing this battle known as JEE or NEET.

Now, we personally haven’t walked down the path of preparing for JEE or NEET during a pandemic but rest assured, we can surely hold up our lights guiding you down through it. So reach out to us, let us know if anything is troubling you and we will try to help you out to the best of our abilities.
