5 Reasons You Should Prepare for IIT

You might have wondered what do the IITs offer that any other college can’t. The question is of greater interest now after the establishment of many new IITs in recent years. It’s natural for an aspirant to wonder whether putting 2 years for the JEE exam is worth it or not if they get new IITs. For these reasons or others, you might have thought about this question many times yourself and you might be successful in finding some of the answers to this question. If you haven’t asked yourself these questions, we highly advise you do. Because only when you find answers to such questions you develop continuous self-motivation not just for JEE preparation but for anything you want to achieve. To help you get started, we are here to just add to (or begin) your list of ‘Why should I prepare for IIT?’

You learn to learn

While our answer to the question, What did we learn in 8 semesters, ~50 courses and 24 sets of exams at IIT Delhi, might sound abstract and inconclusive, we are sure that life at IIT taught us one thing for sure. It taught us how to learn. While schools and coachings basically spoon-feeding us, life in and after college is poles apart. While you will always get help when you seek it, the absence of the spoon-feeding culture pushes you to put in a much greater effort and survive with minimal resources. So, Quora questions like “How do IITians learn to code just from Google?” don’t really come as a surprise as the rigorous life at IIT successfully manages to instill a mindset that, if you have the basic skill of knowing how to use the internet, you can learn almost any skill you want to.

You (get a chance to) make good money

We understand that financial returns of a degree, which, if you think about it, is an investment of time and money, is of paramount importance to a lot of aspirants (and their parents). The average salary package of an IIT graduate is always on the higher side compared to engineering graduates from other colleges. With salary packages ranging from Rs.15 lacs per annum to Rs. 30 lacs per annum a not so rare sight (case in point, IIT Delhi), an IIT degree is always very lucrative from an objective financial viewpoint.

You get to network and connect

Now, putting ourselves in your shoes, we understand that networking and people connections might seem a bit of a dull argument but from a grown-up’s point of view, it is probably one of the most important advantages. With your friends and colleagues in myriad fields of work and at respectable positions, these networks help you find fast-track solutions to your adult-life problems such as job-hunting, starting a business, etc.

You get to have a (good) credential

We cannot emphasize this enough but having that “IIT tag” helps you get a partial and favorable treatment at least for a good part of your early adult life. Whether it is in the form of job applications, discussions with investors for your startup/business, or just presenting to your clients, the “IIT tag” helps you cut lines, strike conversations and receive preferential consideration. While we admit that we too have (shamelessly) taken advantage of these benefits, there is a basic aspect of human psychology involved here. In order for your voice to be heard, people have to believe that you are credible enough, and the IIT tag greatly helps in that aspect.

You get to meet the best brains

While this may come across as the cliche oversold advantage of making it to IIT, the fact is that this is true to its utmost sense. Being surrounded by some very talented people from different corners of this country, the social environment at IIT helps you to be in a constant learning mode, especially after class. You can almost always expect to find someone around you who’s working on the thing you want to seek help for. The culture at IIT pushes you to work harder, not just on your studies but towards the field/career you actually want to end up in.

Of course, the pros mentioned here are not exhaustive. These are based on our experiences as IIT graduates and while someone else’s list might not match ours, you can expect zero denial in agreement from them when it comes to these pros. And if there’s one thing we would like to assert more, it’s that IITs offer you (probably) the best undergraduate experience when it comes to engineering in India. While opening up avenues to a number of diverse fields, IITs serve as the perfect launchpad for a bright and prosperous future.

We believe that working towards a goal becomes a whole lot easier if you know the benefits that you will reap from your success. We hope that the merits mentioned here will help you fend off any disinterested blues and motivate you to work harder on your JEE preparation. Sure, cracking JEE is tough but the benefits of it are more than worth your effort, time and dedication.

Best of luck!
