Topper's Guide to Success - Gaurav Mangla (Batch of 2022, IIT Roorkee)

When we talk to students preparing for competitive exams, we often come across the same old question, 'Which books should I refer to?' Now, there are a plethora of books available online and offline each one claiming itself as the 'Best bok for JEE/NEET.' So, how would you decide which one to buy, right? Well, you don't have to look further than this article because Gaurav Mangla wrote this article talking exactly about this question. He secured a seat in IIT Roorkee after scoring well enough to achieve AIR 2416 in JEE Advanced 2018. Let's read this out!

Hi, I’m Gaurav Mangla, a sophomore student pursuing B.Tech in Mechanical engineering from IIT Roorkee. I secured AIR 2416 in JEE Advanced 2018 and AIR 3297 in JEE Mains 2018. I went to Vidhyadham Coaching, Palwal which was started by my school and is still in its nascent stage. I think that almost all coaching institutes provide you with the same basic knowledge and material. After that, it totally depends on you how you work around with the available resources to achieve your goal.

Like many people, when I started my preparation, I was also doubting myself whether I would be able to cover such a huge syllabus or not, or am I competent enough to clear the JEE exam. But in a few months, I realized that with constant determination and hardworking attitude, we can achieve anything. This starts with having full faith in yourself and your teachers.

I preferred one reference book coupled with study material which was enough for cracking any competitive exam.

During preparation, the biggest and major decision that an aspirant has to make is which books he/she should prefer. There are thousands of books available for each exam. So, it’s impossible to solve all books that exist in the market and one must choose a particular book to understand concepts and practice questions. I preferred one reference book coupled with study material which was enough for cracking any competitive exam.

This all seems easy in theory but it’s quite hard to select one book which you have to follow for your whole preparation. I was also in the same predicament for about a month. There were my batchmates solving books from different authors each one hinting that his book is the ‘best’. Until now, I was preparing with notes that were provided by our coaching but I realized soon enough that these were not enough. It was difficult to cover such wide concepts with one package so one always needs a reference book. What I did, apart from researching on the internet, is to ask my teachers and seniors about their recommended books. It really helped me a lot and I would advise every single aspirant out there to do the same.

I actually referred to HC Verma for Physics and Cengage for Mathematics and Chemistry but you can refer to any book or study material as suggested by your mentor. In my case, there are already so many questions available in the coaching package that I only used to solve about 50% questions from the reference books of Chemistry and Mathematics. Apart from these, weekly assignments also helped me with a better understanding of concepts. In essence, I just want to tell you that the most important thing required to crack JEE is to understand the concept and its application very well. Solving multiple books matter much less than this.

So, always follow your teacher’s advice while choosing books and have full faith in yourself. Always remember that everyone has a unique way of learning and it does not matter how many books you had solved. The things that matter most are your self-confidence and your concept understanding and they are related in a way since you get more confident with better knowledge of concepts.

Thanks and good luck.
